Abstract

This study aims to improve the reading achievement of fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 067247 Medan Tuntungan through the use of picture media. The research was motivated by the students' low reading interest and performance, which were attributed to conventional, teacher-centered teaching methods. The research method employed was Classroom Action Research (CAR) with a qualitative approach, conducted over two cycles. Data were collected through observation, interviews, tests, and documentation. The results revealed a significant improvement in students’ reading outcomes from the pre-test to cycle II. The classical mastery increased from 37.5% in the pre-test to 59% in cycle I, and reached 89% in cycle II, with the average score rising from 60 to 85. Additionally, both student engagement and teacher performance improved markedly. The use of picture media created a more interactive and enjoyable learning environment, enhanced student participation, and increased motivation to read. It can be concluded that the application of picture media is an effective strategy for improving elementary students' reading skills and can serve as an innovative alternative in classroom instruction.
